According to the data presented by the Ministry of Finance, on 31 December 2007 the amount of EU structural assistance absorbed under the Single Programming Document (SPD) made up LTL 1 billion and 907 million or represented 62 per cent of total EU assistance (LTL 3 billion and 91 million)*

Yesterday, the Conference “Creating the Future of Lithuania: EU Structural Assistance for Lithuania 2007-2013” was organised by the Ministry of Finance in Vilnius (“ForumPalace”, Konstitucijos av. 26). In the conference strategy and three operational programmes – the major work accomplished –- were presented to social and economic partners that hade been actively involved in the preparatory process.

Today, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania approved the draft Resolution prepared by the Ministry of Finance and aimed at detailed presentation of institutions responsible for the implementation of the Lithuanian Strategy for the Use of EU Structural Assistance for the Years 2007-2013 and operational programmes, their functions, rights and responsibilities.

During the celebration ceremony Mr. R. Šadžius and D. Hübner certified by their signatures that the Operational Programmes for Economic Growth and Cohesion Promotionare properly developed, approved by the Commission and are in the initial phase of their implementation.

Today, in Brussels, the Finance Minister Rimantas Šadžius met with the Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities Vladimir Špidla. The meeting was arranged on the occasion of the approval by the European Commission of the Operational Programme for the Development of Human Resources, under which 13.8 % of EU structural assistance allocated to Lithuania for the period 2007-2013 will be used.

The European Commission has already approved the Operational Programmes for Economic Growth and Cohesion Promotion through which almost 85 % of the European Union Structural Assistance funds for the years 2007-2013 will be used.

Cohesion policy has had a proven effect in helping the European Union's regions to develop, but it will face some new challenges in years ahead. Those are the findings in the European Commission's latest report on economic and social cohesion . The fourth such report, published today, provides the economic, social and territorial situation of the enlarged Union of 27 Member States and 268 regions for the first time. The report contains detailed analysis of the position of regions in terms of GDP, productivity and employment. It identifies a series of challenges with which Member States and regions will be confronted in the years ahead.
